قال الرئيس البرازيلي جايير بولسونارو إن نجم هوليوود ليوناردو ديكابريو موّل الحرائق التي تشتعل في غابات الأمازون المطيرة، دون تقديم أي دليل، في أحدث هجوم من قبل الزعيم اليميني في إلقاء المسؤولية عن حرائق الغابات، التي أثارت قلقاً دولياً.
كان بولسونارو يعلق على ما يبدو على منشورات كتبت على الشبكات الاجتماعية، تقول إن الصندوق العالمي للحياة البرية قد دفع أموالاً من أجل صور التقطها رجال إطفاء متطوعون، يفترض أنها استخدمت بعد ذلك من أجل جمع تبرعات، من بينها تبرع قيمته 500 ألف دولار قدمه ديكابريو.
كما قال بولسونارو خلال تصريحات مقتضبة أمام قصر الرئاسة «ليوناردو ديكابريو رجل رائع أليس كذلك؟ أعطى أموالاً لحرق الأمازون».

I worked with a troop of them in eastern Brazil back in 2017. It was tough hot and at times hopeless work. Some of them were Guajajara tribesmen who had dedicated their lives to protecting what was left of their ancestral forests – most had already been logged and burned. Some of them had been murdered for trying. It was brutal and tragic and we should all bow down to them for what they do – for so little money that they have to roll cigarettes with writing paper.

من جانبه، نفى الصندوق العالمي للحياة البرية تلقيه مساهمة من ديكابريو، أو حصوله على صور من رجال الإطفاء، كذلك نفى ديكابريو تبرعه للصندوق العالمي للحياة البرية.
وقال في بيان إن «شعب البرازيل يعمل على إنقاذ تراثه الطبيعي والثقافي. ولكن لم نمول المنظمات المستهدفة على الرغم من استحقاقها الدعم».
ولمن لا يعرف النشاط والشغف الذي يحتل حياة النجم الأمريكي، يعد ديكابريو من المدافعين بقوة عن مكافحة التغير المناخي، وتحدث مراراً عن قضايا بيئية ومن بينها حرائق غابات الأمازون.

بينما تعد مؤسسته التي تركز على المشروعات التي «تحمي الحياة البرية المعرضة للخطر من الانقراض» جزءاً من مؤسسة «تحالف الأرض» (Earth Alliance).
وقد تبرع الممثل البالغ عمره 44 عاماً عبر مؤسسته تلك بمبلغ 5 ملايين دولار، كمساعدة لغابات الأمازون خلال فترة تعرضها للحرائق، في أغسطس/آب 2019، وفق مجلة The Hollywood Reporter الفنية الأمريكية.
